Re-Evaluation of the Ionian Basin Evolution during the Late Cretaceous to Eocene (Aetoloakarnania Area, Western Greece)

Field investigation, Microfacies analysis, and biostratigraphy have been carried out in the central parts of Ionian Basin (Aetoloakarnania area, Western Greece) order to decipher depositional environments that developed during accumulation Upper Cretaceous Eocene carbonate succession. Three different Standard types (SMF) observed, corresponding two (Facies Zones or FZ) a platform progradation. The three SMF which occur study area are: 1. 3 includes mudstone/wackestone with planktic foraminifera radiolaria, toe-of-slope (FZ: 3), 2. 4, can be classified as polymict clast-supported microbreccia, indicating toe-of-slope-slope environment 4) 3. 5 is characterized by allochthonous bioclastic breccia components deriving from adjacent platforms reflects slope environment. analysis provided evidence change origin sedimentary biota showing transition slope, well organism distribution.
